OK, here we go. It’s John Lohman here. For over 25 years, I’ve run my own business. As you’ve probably guessed, I’ve often faced the challenges of dealing with big corporations. I’ve seen it all. It’s tough out there, but I’ve learned a few things along the way.
I am planning to share my personal experiences-turned-advice with you. I have a lot to go through. Let me share some advice on how to level the playing field now. Hopefully, it will give you a taste of what will follow in future posts.
Unfair Payment Terms
Big corporations love to impose unfair payment terms. They know we can’t push back easily. I’ve seen contracts with long payment periods and penalties that only benefit them. Don’t accept these terms blindly. Negotiate. Read the contract thoroughly and ask for changes. It’s your business on the line. If negotiation fails, know your legal rights. I once had to consult a lawyer to escape a bad contract. It was a lifesaver.
Delayed Payments
Delayed payments are another common issue. Big businesses delay payments, knowing we rely on their money. Recognize their delaying tactics like ‘processing times’ or ‘approval delays’. Send regular reminders and keep detailed records. Set clear deadlines in your contract. If delays continue, seek legal recourse. Small claims court can be a viable option. Knowing your rights can make a huge difference.
Employee Poaching
Employee poaching is disheartening. Big corporations offer better pay and benefits to our staff. Recognize the signs of poaching, like sudden interest in your staff’s activities. Offer competitive wages and create a positive work environment. Loyalty is built, not bought. If poaching happens, address it immediately. Talk to your employees and understand their concerns. Sometimes, it’s about more than money.
Building Strong Contracts
A strong contract can protect you. Include clear payment terms, deadlines, and penalties for delays. Don’t shy away from negotiating. Be clear about your terms. It’s your business at stake. Having legal support is crucial. A good lawyer can help draft and review contracts. It’s an investment in your business’s future.
Strengthening Business Relationships
Building trust with big corporations is essential. Deliver quality work consistently and be reliable. Over time, I’ve built strong relationships with big clients by being dependable. Maintain professionalism, even when things get tough. Stay calm and professional. It sets you apart. Good communication is key. Keep your clients informed. Regular updates can prevent misunderstandings.
Seeking Legal Advice
Legal counsel is important. They can provide guidance and support. I’ve sought legal advice many times, and it’s been invaluable. Find a lawyer who understands small businesses. They should be approachable and knowledgeable. Cost-effective legal solutions exist. Some lawyers offer affordable services for small businesses. It’s worth exploring.
Once Upon a Time at a Conference Room Somewhere Downtown

Let me share a little story from my own experience. I was in a meeting with a big corporation. They were trying to sneak in a clause that would delay my payments by 90 days. I decided to go for a joke and see what would happen. I often use this tactic to explore the opposite negotiating side.
“90 days? You do realise I’m not a fine wine, right? I don’t get better with age.”
Everyone laughed, but guess what? It worked. We got it down to 30 days. Sometimes, a little humour goes a long way. But one thought stayed in my mind forever. ‘It didn’t cost them anything, why delay the payment date to the max?’
